2020 Honda CR-V vs Toyota RAV4 Head to Head

Two of the top-selling compact SUVs on the market today are the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4. This popular segment has been extremely popular for its fuel economy, safety features, cargo space, and especially its amazing value. But which of these two models is the best? We’ll compare the 2020 CR-V EX-L AWD to the 2020 RAV4 AWD and see which comes out on top.

Performance

The Toyota RAV4 XLE comes standard with a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder base engine with 203 horsepower. Along with all-wheel drive, it’s a decent performer. The Honda CR-V EX-L has slightly less horsepower at 190hp from its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, but its responsiveness far outdoes the Toyota. Plus, its city gas mileage and combined city-highway mileage are better than the Toyota.

Interior Space

In the segment, compact doesn’t mean squishy. The Toyota offers passenger volume of 98.9 cubic feet and 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space. That might be ‘good enough’ for some, but if you want the most capacity possible, look to Honda. The 2020 CR-V offers 105.9 cubic feet of passenger volume and 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Carry more, my friends!

Safety Systems

Toyota offers standard driver assistive safety systems with the RAV4 XLE including Blind Spot Monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist. Honda simply goes further with Honda Sensing technologies that include Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation System, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, and Lane Keeping Assist System.

Value Added

There’s no question the Toyota RAV4 is popular – it just can’t hold a candle to the CR-V. The 2020 Honda CR-V EX-L includes heated power side mirrors, leather-trimmed interior, a fantastic Display Audio infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration, and USB ports for fast device charging by the rear seats. Dollar for dollar, the 2020 Honda CR-V outperforms, out-carries, and out-values the RAV4. But why take our word for it?
