What Are the Signs of Brake Issues?

No matter what kind of vehicle you drive, how you drive it, or where you drive, your brakes will eventually wear out. That’s what they are designed to do. They operate by squeezing soft metallic friction material – brake pads – against a hard metal surface – brake rotor. The friction causes your vehicle to slow down but also causes the brake pads to wear. That means over time, you’re going to have brake issues.   Do you know what to expect when your brakes are worn? Or is there some other condition happening that needs to be addressed?

Signs of Brake Issues

Squealing noise when pressing the brakes

The most common concern you come across with brakes is a squealing noise. It can mean many different things, including worn-out brake pads. When your brakes squeal just a few times when your vehicle is cold, it’s probably nothing to be concerned about – moisture causes that noises sometimes. But if it persists or gets louder the longer you drive, it could be a sign you need your brakes inspected or replaced. If left too long, it can cause more extensive, and expensive, brake issues.

Grinding noise when pressing the brake pedal

If there’s a rough grinding noise when you apply the brakes, it’s no laughing matter. That usually indicates that your brake pads are worn out and need to be replaced, but the grinding could mean your rotors are getting damaged as well. Don’t delay – get your brakes looked at sooner rather than later.

Squeaking noise when you’re driving

If you hear a squeaky noise as you drive, but not when you press the brake, it may be an indicator tab rubbing on the rotor. That could mean your brakes are almost done. But squeaking can be caused by other problems too such as a bad wheel hub, steering component or suspension part. You should get it checked out to make sure your vehicle is in good repair.   If you need your brakes inspected or replaced, or if you aren’t quite sure what that noise is from your car, come to Jay Wolfe Honda.
